Luukas Hiltunen

Hiltunen is a composer known for a deeply personal, spiritual and innovative musical language that bridges centuries of tradition. Drawing inspiration from Finnish folk music, the sounds of nature, and ancestral ritual, his work weaves these organic elements into a refined and coherent structure, rooted in the Romantic era’s expressive depth and the intricate polyphonic textures of the Renaissance. The result is a sound world where timelessness and immediacy coexist — melodically rich, harmonically layered, and emotionally resonant. Through this synthesis, Hiltunen creates music that feels both ancient and new, deeply rooted yet unmistakably forward-looking.
Recognised with acclaim

Recognised for his distinctive voice and imaginative musical storytelling, Hiltunen garnered critical acclaim as a nominee for the Young Composer of 2024 by the Mikkeli Music Festival in July 2023. His reputation has further been cemented by a prestigious commission from the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig – a reconstruction of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s (1809–1847) unfinished Symphony No. 6 in C major (1842–46), based on the sketches housed at the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford University — a bold and historically sensitive project that bridges scholarship and creativity in equal measure.
