Rob Hall studied music at the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, specialising in composition and clarinet before later focusing on saxophone. In his first term he won a composition competition judged by Sir James MacMillan. Further accolades followed, including the Proctor Gregg Performance Award and the Terence Greaves Award for Big Band Writing, before he was awarded a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied jazz.

Hall has established a diverse catalogue of commissioned works encompassing choral, chamber, orchestral and jazz ensembles, as well as solo repertoire, small-group compositions and multimedia projects. His music has been performed at venues including London’s Royal Festival Hall and Barbican Centre, Manchester’s Martin Harris Centre and RNCM Concert Hall, and Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and University Concert Hall. Performances have also featured at festivals including the Edinburgh Jazz Festival and Glastonbury Festival.

His first published work was a commission from ABRSM. Since then, his music has appeared through BrassWind, Trinity College London, Forton Music and Clifton Edition, which has also republished his piano collections originally issued by Spartan Press.

As a leader and co-leader, Hall has released nine albums of original and improvised music on the British contemporary music label FMR, including recordings arising from his long-standing collaboration with Scottish pianist and composer Chick Lyall.
