Close Encounters for Oboe and Piano draws on historic themes connected to the medieval closes and wynds of Dundee, a major Scottish port. Often named after prominent residents, these narrow passageways are given life by the records of their occupiers or through local legend.

Dreamweavers opens, depicting the city’s former cotton industry, with its links to Calcutta referenced later in Raga & Jigs.
A King Undercover tells of the bravery of William Couttie, a local butcher, who helped protect King James V from robbers.
Beefcan Alley strikes a boisterous, kicking-the-can mood, contrasted with a calmer marine scene in the finale, Passage to the Shore.

Suitable for intermediate to advanced oboists.

Review by Paul Harris (composer):
“Close Encounters for Oboe & Piano is an accessible set of short pieces by Rob Hall based on old alleyways of Dundee. But don’t expect too much of a Scottish flavour! Each piece has its own delightful and distinct character and identity. Ideal for the intermediate to advanced player who enjoys some challenging but always attractive rhythms and melodies. Ideal for slipping into a recital, guaranteed to engage the audience..”
