J Remy
J. Rémy was a professional cellist for 35 years. He studied with William Pleeth at the GSM, later with Christopher Bunting and Maurice Eisenberg and was fortunate enough to have seen Casals conducting his Oratorio ‘El Pessebre’ in London in 1963. After a busy 6 years in London teaching at the City of London School and the GSM Junior Exhibitioner Scheme, free-lancing with the LPO, the BBC Concert Orchestra, for West End shows and on tour with the Scottish Theatre Ballet, he spent 30 years with the BBC and Ulster Orchestras in Northern Ireland ( a period in which the UO toured in the Far East, Europe, the USA and gave concerts in Dublin with Rostropovich and Tortelier).
J. had to stop playing in 2000 because of a progressive rheumatic condition. He thereafter taught for another 10 years & attended the International Cello Festivals in Manchester and Kronberg – historic events and a chance to see world-famous names in master-class and performance. Rémy never lost his love for the sound of the orchestra, its great traditions and greatest exponents. He now lives in the Antrim Glens and is married to a professional violinist who stepped
out of Irish legend, the ‘Tir na n-Óg’ of the Gaelic poets.
