Théophile Lalliet (1837—92) studied oboe at the Conservatoire in Paris with Gustav Vogt and won the Premier Prix in 1860. A variety of orchestral appointments followed both in Paris and Berlin and from 1862 until 1889 he was in the orchestra of the Paris Opera. Amongst his many compositions for the oboe is this Nocturne which is based on a piano solo by Theodor Döhler whose salon music enjoyed a great vogue in Victorian times.
