Janne Kolodub

Janne Kolodub comes from a family of musicians and was born in the town of Vinitsa. She was educated in Kiev, and trained as a violinist and pianist at the Conservatoire there. Her life-long interest in composition could not be denied and she studied under Lyatoshinsky, and with her husband L. N. Kolodub. In addition to her activity as a composer, Janne teaches the piano at the Kiev Conservatoire. She is a creative teacher and a masterly performer. She is a Professor at the National Music Academy, a member of the Ukrainian Composers’ Union, and has been honoured with the title of Art Master of Ukraine.

Janne Kolodub’s list of compositions begins in 1964 and reflects her wide ranging interests. She has composed for ballet and musical theatre, for orchestra, for chamber ensembles and for soloist with keyboard. She has also written for voice, for children, for cartoon films, and has arranged folk songs. Her musical style is an exciting combination of the traditional harmonies of Ukrainian folk music with modern trends in Western European music. She writes vigorous rhythms, uses modal tonalities and is not afraid to experiment with the timbres and characteristics of the instruments in her compositions. She has received enthusiastic reviews both at home and abroad.
