Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) is rightly celebrated as one of the great architects of the Classical style. During a remarkably long and productive career, he composed over sixty piano sonatas, works that combine elegant melodies, wit, imagination and impeccable craftsmanship. Although many were written for the lighter touch of the harpsichord or early fortepiano, they remain rewarding and enjoyable on the modern piano.

This volume contains three contrasting sonatas: the dramatic Sonata in E minor, the expressive Sonata in C sharp minor and the bright, good-humoured Sonata in D major. Together they provide an excellent introduction to Haydn’s distinctive musical voice, offering developing pianists opportunities to explore lyricism, clarity of texture and Classical style.
