Light and Shade was written as a virtuosic showcase for Simon Milton who gave the first performance on 11th March 1998 at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.

My idea was to explore the full range of the clarinet and to demonstrate its incredible range of dynamics, articulations, and colours. Make it your own and use plenty of rubato where necessary.
