Three Quartobtudes

Three Quartobtudes (1983) was performed at the International Double Reed Convention in Florida, USA, with the composer in the ensemble. The title is a reminder of Graham Powning’s enjoyment of cryptic crosswords, especially during long rehearsals at the Sydney Opera House! The music has adopted some features from Bartok, notably parallel seconds and jerky rhythms.
