Venezuelan Treasures for Piano Volume 8

Clifton Edition and pianist Clara Rodriguez present the eighth volume in the Venezuelan Treasures for Piano series, the first of two collections devoted to Modesta Bor. Born on Margarita Island in 1926, Bor trained as a pianist before Guillain–Barré syndrome redirected her remarkable musical life towards composition. After studying with Vicente Emilio Sojo, Juan Bautista Plaza and Antonio Estévez in Caracas, she travelled to Moscow, where her extraordinary musicianship impressed Aram Khachaturian and earned her a place in his composition class at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire. She returned to Venezuela as a composer, teacher, choral conductor and researcher whose work united creative independence with a profound commitment to her country’s musical culture.

The piano works in this volume illuminate Bor’s distinctive balance of memory and invention, discipline and freedom. The Preludio brings the formal clarity of the Baroque suite into contact with musical recollections of Margarita Island, while the Pequeña Danza para Piano, Juangriego Waltz and Valse para Piano are animated by characteristically Venezuelan hemiolas and syncopations. Written in Moscow while Bor was separated from her young family, the tender Suite Infantil evokes childhood experiences through delicate textures and subtly jazzy harmonies. The Four Fugues, meanwhile, place her command of counterpoint in direct conversation with Venezuelan rhythm and melody. Together, these pieces reveal a composer whose music is deeply rooted in a particular landscape and culture, yet speaks with an expressive power that reaches far beyond them.
