“4 for Jazz” presents three flute quartets in jazz/popular styles which have been written for players who are about Grade 6 standard.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

No. 1: Four-sail originally began life as part of the Jazz Colours series. The melody is passed freely between all four instruments, so care must be taken to keep the accompanying parts down in volume. In all cases, the melody appears at the top of the texture.

No. 2: Ostinato Four-mulato is written around the opening 2 bar phrase which continues throughout the piece, appearing in all four parts and in a different harmonisation on each occurrence. Players should practise this ostinato theme in unison – each flute begins with its statement – so that the rhythm and phrasing can be synchronised and agreed upon. Try to ensure that the melodic lines are above the level of the accompaniment and always pay careful attention to the dynamics of the piece.

No. 3: Four-merly‘s rhythm has been notated classically, but in all cases the quavers should be given the “swing” treatment as indicated in the tempo line. Once again, make sure the melodic lines can be clearly heard and try to adhere closely to the dynamics and articulation. There is provision for improvisation (see moments in the score and various parts marked ‘*’).
