Eugene Walckiers (1793-1866) was a French flautist who studied with Tulou. He was never to be a great performer on the flute, but his skill as a composer was appreciated by his teacher Reicha whose favourite pupil he is said to have been.
According to H.M. Fitzgibbon, much of his chamber music is outstanding, some of the best ever written fortheflute. Though not as well-known as Kurnmer or Kuhlau, Walckiers writes with a personal style full of freshness, variety of sentiment and imagination. His compositions for three flutes are given special mention and his sets of flute duets.
Walckiers also wrote for flute and strings, flute and piano and composed a concertino. In each case, one or two movements stand out as full of charm and invention, often with lovely slow movements and rich modulations. His opus 12 consists of three well-written trios for flute, clarinet and bassoon in B flat, F and C minor.
