Gundula Stojanova Gruen

Gundula Stojanova Gruen is a virtuoso violinist, singer and ethnomusicologist who has travelled extensively in Eastern Europe and the Balkans, transcribing melodies she learned first-hand from Roma and folk musicians.

Described by Songlines Magazine as ‘a shining star in the UK’s Balkan music scene’, her unique performance style showcases a technical ability acquired through intensive conservatoire training as well as a colourful and charismatic personality.

Originally from Bavaria, Gundula completed a BMus in Augsburg and postgraduate studies in Munich. In addition, she undertook intensive studies of Alexander Technique and practiced singing. Later, she gained a distinction in her master’s degree in Ethnomusicology at City University, London.

Gundula is based in London and works as a performer and tutor. She regularly travels the Balkans on a mission to discover more of the fascinating music there, which she arranges and performs with her ensemble Tatcho Drom or with the Magic Violin String Trio. Over the years Gundula has gained a high reputation amongst musicians and ethnomusicologists for her deep insight and knowledge of Balkan music and amongst Romany people for collecting, preserving and promoting their traditional music.
